The committees outreach included ParentSquare and targeted outreach to staff; results showed a plurality favoring the current start date and calendar structure. When asked whether an extended year would be acceptable, about 72% of respondents said it would negatively affect their family. The survey also found near-majority support for adding early-release days to provide staff planning time; a smaller group supported adding a fall break.
Staff emphasized the need to coordinate the calendar with Houston Community College for dual-credit alignment. Trustees asked for more disaggregated data (who answered each question: parents versus teachers versus staff) and for the presentation of quantitative measures alongside qualitative feedback to support any calendar change. Staff said it would return with a proposed calendar next month, grounded in the survey findings and coordination with neighboring districts.
Trustees framed the discussion as data-driven: while survey responses are important, they urged the district to weigh instructional outcomes and summer learning programs (noting that a subset of students attend expansion summer instruction) when deciding whether to extend or modify the calendar.
