HUNTINGTON — The Huntington County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted Ordinance 2025-20 on Dec. 1, establishing a county policy to withhold public records when requested for commercial purposes under Indiana Code 5-14-3. Commissioner Tom Wall moved for adoption; Commissioner Rob Miller seconded the motion, and it passed 2-0.
The ordinance, described at the meeting as a policy implementing I.C. 5-14-3, sets rules governing when the county may refuse or limit disclosure of public records sought for resale or commercial solicitation. The County Attorney presented a separate draft ordinance (2025-21) proposing fines for littering, but commissioners took no action on that measure at this meeting.
Supporters at the meeting framed the ordinance as a way to align county practice with state law on requests that seek records for commercial exploitation; the board did not discuss specific enforcement procedures during the session. The motion to adopt passed without recorded dissent; commissioners noted the measure as routine business on the meeting agenda.
By the end of the meeting commissioners also approved routine items including claims, payroll and several permits.
