Huntington County applies for $748,513 in Community Crossings funds, approves Erie Stone Road speed study

Huntington County’s highway department submitted a 2026 Community Crossings Matching Grant application totaling $748,513 and the board approved a related traffic study Nov. 3.
Highway Superintendent Bridgett Burkhart reported that application #15209 requests $630,953 with a local match of $126,190.60 and application #15217 requests $117,560 with a $23,512 match, for a combined ask of $748,513. The county also received an Aquaswirl fuel containment system, which county staff scheduled to install this week.
Commissioner Tom Wall moved to approve an agreement with Butler, Fairman and Seufert, Inc., to perform a speed study on Erie Stone Road; Commissioner Terry Stoffel seconded and the motion passed 3-0. Burkhart said crews are converting trucks for plowing and that drivers are running township routes with front plows attached to familiarize themselves with changed handling and visibility ahead of winter operations.
The grant and study are intended to support local roadway maintenance and safety; the minutes do not specify project start dates or award timing, which remain subject to the state grant program’s review.
