Posey County departments report Project Lifesaver donation, road weight limits and jail housing; board approves small crop-damage payment

At the Feb. 18 meeting, Posey County department heads updated commissioners on emergency management, highway operations and corrections, and the board approved a small payment for crop damage linked to Western By-Pass construction.
EMA Director Carrie Thompson said the Project Lifesaver program received a $500 donation and that a fourth person is enrolled. She said the Wadesville outdoor warning siren remains malfunctioning; the manufacturer suspects interference from faulty cellular equipment on the tower and EMA is working with the vendor on a remedy.
Highway Superintendent Steve Schenk said crews posted weight limits on several county roads because of recent weather; he noted fewer roads are restricted than in the prior posting because more roads have been paved. Schenk said permits are available by calling either highway garage and estimated the limits could be lifted by mid-March.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Fortune gave the inmate housing update: DOC 9, Vanderburgh County 14, Posey County 79, for a total of 102 inmates. Fortune said four jailers were involved in two incidents that required medical attention; those jailers have returned to work. He also said a recent incident initiated by the City of Mt. Vernon caused damage to a county deputy vehicle; "the damages are roughly $10,000.00," he said, and repairs will start this week. Fortune reported that radios are working well after recent updates.
Separately, Commissioner Bill Collins said an adjacent landowner was assessed $569.80 for crop damage during Western By-Pass construction; County Attorney Joe Harrison worked with the landowner to determine the amount. Commissioner Eric Koester moved to approve the payment; Greg Newman seconded and the motion passed 3-0. The payment will be made from bond funds.
