Posey County to seek bids to clean Highway 69 South nuisance property if owner does not act

The Posey County Commissioners voted Feb. 18 to seek contractor bids to clean a nuisance property on Highway 69 South if the owner does not take action before the board's next regular meeting in March. Commissioner Bill Collins moved the action and it passed unanimously, 3-0.
Posey County Building Commissioner Ed Battieger told the board he contacted the property owner and learned the owner remains incarcerated and that "the fine had been imposed but not paid." Commissioners asked whether bids had been gathered; Battieger said no and said he could have bids by the second meeting in March.
Commissioner Eric Koester asked when bids could be gathered and urged the county to proceed so it could clean the property if necessary. Collins’s motion directed staff to obtain three bids and return them to the board at the second March meeting if the property had not been cleaned prior to that date. Greg Newman seconded the motion; it carried 3-0.
The order is a procedural step toward abatement: if no voluntary cleanup occurs, the county will use the solicited bids to authorize removal and recovery of costs in accordance with local enforcement procedures. The board did not set a specific removal contractor at the meeting and did not state an estimated cleanup cost.
