Council discusses conditional Health Department appointments; sheriff reports jail accreditation audit

The Jackson County Council discussed two conditional appointments to the Health Department—Dr. Amy Steffi and Denise Neawedde—and noted the requirement that one appointee be a Democrat and the other a Republican. The council did not finalize the appointments and said discussion would continue at the December meeting.
Sheriff Rick Meyer presented the October jail report and updated the council on pending Department of Corrections payments. Meyer told the council the jail is pursuing accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC); an audit has been completed and results are expected in February or March 2026.
Human Resources director Jeff Hubbard briefed the council on board appointments and announced open enrollment meetings beginning Nov. 24. Auditor Melissa Gray presented October fund balances and the Treasurer’s report, noted a correction needed for an Emergency Transfer Resolution and requested election days be added to the 2026 holiday schedule.
The council recognized Conner Barnett for receiving the Hoosier Hospitality Award for contributions to the Rock the Rhine event. United Way’s planned community conversation was canceled for low participation and may be rescheduled. Amanda Lowery moved to adjourn; John Nolting seconded and the meeting concluded. The next regular meeting is set for Dec. 17 at 8:00 a.m.
