Commissioners unanimously accept $10,018 from dissolving veterans group for county museum displays

The Anderson County Operations Committee unanimously voted to accept a one-time donation from a dissolving 501(c)(3) and designate the money for a county-managed veterans memorabilia fund.

Scott Nation, the county’s veteran service officer, told the committee that the group running a planned military history museum intends to close its nonprofit and transfer assets to the county. "And roughly right now, there's 10,000, $10,018 in the" account, Nation said, asking the commission to authorize a county code to hold the funds for veterans displays.

Commissioner Foster pressed for caution and legal safeguards, asking whether a written agreement was required to accept the funds. "Do we need, like, a written agreement to accept this in?" Foster asked, and the law director confirmed a written agreement is appropriate to ensure protections and clarify how the funds are spent.

The committee approved a motion to accept the funds and direct staff to prepare the necessary agreement and coding so the veteran service office can use the money for military memorabilia and related expenses. The motion passed without recorded opposition.

The committee did not record a line-by-line roll call in the minutes; staff were directed to prepare the formal agreement spelling out insurance and spending procedures and to bring the agreement back to the county records and purchasing process if required.
