Council reviews draft lighting ordinance and moves fireworks rules toward public hearing

Mayor Kathi Knight presented two proposed ordinances at the start of the Feb. 12 meeting.
On lighting, Knight said a draft ordinance has been prepared for council review and that members should examine the draft and provide feedback or be prepared to discuss it at the next meeting. She said lighting along Dry Creek Lane has become intrusive and that other communities have adopted similar ordinances to preserve night skies; the stated intent is to avoid unnecessarily restrictive rules while protecting the community’s dark skies.
On fireworks, Knight said the proposed ordinance would formalize that the town will follow the State Fire Marshal’s recommendations and give the Fire Chief authority to permit or restrict fireworks, noting concerns about increased fire risk during current water shortages. The ordinance would also allow fireworks displays at the rodeo grounds, but rodeo events would take precedence over displays. Knight said the fireworks ordinance will proceed to a public hearing for possible adoption.
Council did not take final action on either ordinance at the meeting; members were asked to review the lighting draft and the fireworks ordinance was scheduled for public hearing.
