Vermilion board approves exterior changes at two homes, including railing, deck and roof work

The Vermilion Historic Design Review Board on June 4 approved exterior work at two properties: siding and gutters at 5284 Ohio Street and a package of railing, decking, door and roofing changes at 519 Washington.
At 519 Washington, the applicant identified himself as Jim Lojgan and described plans to remove a deteriorated rooftop railing and replace it with a code-compliant railing and decking surface. "We're gonna put a rubber roof over that," the applicant said, and described installing a deck surface he called "Tyreks" (the applicant’s term for the synthetic decking material he proposed). He said the new railing will meet code with openings no greater than 4 inches and that the rear door (in place since 1914) will be replaced with a storm door and a regular door, likely metal with clear glass to increase interior light.
During the same agenda slot, Robert Lloyd (self-identified) asked for emergency roof replacement for his home and said he planned to change the roof color to black and hire a contractor to complete the work.
A board member moved to accept the applications as presented; the motion was seconded and carried by the board. Members confirmed applicants intend to meet building-code requirements for railing openings and other safety elements.
The board did not record additional conditions for either approval in the meeting transcript. The items will proceed through the normal permitting and inspection process.
