Macon County approves $200,000 from general fund for lunches at Franklin High and Highlands School, vote 3-2

On Aug. 13 the Macon County Board of Commissioners approved a one-time allocation of up to $200,000 from the general fund to support school lunches at Franklin High School and Highlands School for the upcoming school year.
David Lightner, Macon County School Nutrition Director, explained that both schools do not qualify for the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) and that program eligibility data is reported late in the school year, which is why the funding request came after the budget was adopted. Lightner provided a handout outlining objectives, solutions and benefits tied to the request.
Commissioner Gary Shields moved and Commissioner Antoine seconded the appropriation. The motion passed 3-2, with Shields, Antoine and Commissioner Young voting in favor and Commissioners Higdon and Shearl opposed.
The board instructed staff to fund the request from the general fund balance. Health Director Kathy McGaha separately noted that the Public Health Department will continue to use existing fee schedules until the board approves any new fee plan.
Next steps: School Nutrition will deploy funds to the identified schools for the coming year and the board will notate the appropriation in budget amendments.
