County honors deputy for Lake DuBay rescue; state rep reads citation

The Portage County Public Safety Emergency Management Committee recognized a deputy who rescued two people and their dogs after they fell through thin ice on Lake DuBay on Dec. 2.
Sheriff described how the deputy located the victims within minutes, used a rope to pull one person back onto the ice and entered the water to pull a weakened woman to safety, actions the sheriff called lifesaving.
State Representative Moreci presented a citation from the state assembly and read the text into the record, saying the deputy "entered the frigid waters of Lake DuBay to rescue the man and woman who were struggling in the water approximately 25 to 50 feet from the shoreline, going above and beyond the call of duty." Moreci added that the deputy's "selfless actions, bravery, and professionalism" exemplify exceptional public service.
Sheriff also credited the county's High Visibility Squad program — which places deputies living in the community so they are close to incidents — for enabling a quicker response time that helped prevent a tragic outcome. The committee offered congratulations and thanks.
