Tina Schweinhard, chair of the Vermilion Parks Department, told the Historic Design Review Board on Oct. 1 that the department had a donor and an artist lined up to install a three‑piece, seasonal photo‑op sign on the Main Street pump house.
Schweinhard said the sign is intended as a downtown amenity and described two faces: a brighter, glossy summer image the department would display from May through October and a matte winter scene to be used November through April. She said the artist is Chris Riddle and that the department has a donor to underwrite the work.
Schweinhard provided construction details the board requested: the sign will be assembled in three pieces and mounted on a frame attached to the pump house; one panel dimension listed in the application is about 113 inches high by 162 inches wide. She told the board the design allows staff to unscrew and flip panels seasonally and that the mounting will maintain access to the utility boxes behind the building.
Board members asked about materials and the sign’s support structure. Schweinhard said the department plans pressure‑treated lumber for the frame, discussed using heavier members where the sign must cantilever from the wall, and confirmed the department would not block access to electrical boxes. Commissioners voiced support for the idea and suggested the department review proven attachment and weatherproofing methods.
The board approved the Parks Department’s application by motion. The Parks Department will finalize mounting details so city staff can confirm electrical‑box access and ensure the installation meets applicable building and safety requirements.
The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Court Complex.
