Historic design review board approves multiple signage and façade applications

The Vermilion Historic Design Review Board met Oct. 1 at the Municipal Court Complex and approved six applications for signs, exterior repairs and a new residential build.
The board approved an application from the Vermillion Boat Club to replace and repaint existing signs and update landscaping near the pool. Louie ****, who identified himself as representing the Boat Club, told the board the signs will occupy the existing sign locations and described a new background color. The board discussed color and placement and voted to accept the application.
Commissioners also approved an awning and lettering application for a Liberty Avenue storefront. The applicant described adding same‑size letters and house numbers and confirmed permission for the awning; commissioners raised concern about missing tile coping on the west side of the roof and advised the applicant to secure the coping before weather exposure. The application was accepted after that discussion.
At 775 Decatur, a property owner described replacing a deteriorated railing and repairing siding and decking to restore the building’s appearance. The board reviewed materials and stair details and approved the proposed repairs.
The board accepted an application for a new single‑story house proposed for a South Street lot. The applicant described a 977‑square‑foot, single‑story retirement house with a one‑car garage, small front porch and stonework facing South Street; commissioners said the design would fit the neighborhood and voted to approve it.
A three‑piece, seasonal sign for the Main Street pump house — proposed by the Vermilion Parks Department — was also approved; details are covered in a separate article focused on that item.
Finally, the board accepted a façade‑painting and trim scheme for 681 Main Street that uses a two‑tone approach (black trim, dark gray siding) while leaving existing brick unpainted.
