Piney River Volunteer Fire Chief Billy Hughes described a multi‑vendor procurement process and a vehicle specification developed with firefighters and mechanics before the Board authorized the department to place an order for an equipped Kenworth tanker.
Chief Hughes said the total price before a prepayment discount was $807,244; a prepayment discount for cab and chassis reduces the cost, and departments are placing orders now to avoid anticipated manufacturing and component price increases in 2026–2027. "This is the truck we designed based off of actual usage to make coverage for seven companies plus the mutual aid agreement with Amherst," Hughes said.
The Board adopted Resolution R2025‑85 authorizing the order and directed staff to include $645,795.20 (80%) in the FY27 proposed budget, with final funding subject to adoption of the FY27 budget. The motion passed by roll call vote 3–0 (Reed, Parr, Rutherford voting yes). No immediate appropriation was approved at the meeting; the funding direction places the county share as a request in next year’s budget process.
