Liaison reports county partnership grant for evening shelter; members raise concerns about gas station near wellhead

The municipal liaison reported that the city council approved a $150,000 grant to partner with Portage County to acquire and renovate a property as an evening shelter. Board members raised concerns about neighborhood impacts and how the shelter would operate; the liaison said logistics — such as whether the site would operate 24 hours or only as an evening shelter — remain under discussion and could change.

Separately, members discussed a recently approved permit for a Quick Trip station sited very close to a Zone A wellhead protection area. Trustees and the liaison noted the site’s proximity to drinking-water protection zones and described the permit as conditional zoning for gas stations, which limits the city’s options: blocking the permit could prompt litigation, but members expressed worry about the potential environmental risk. No formal action by the board was taken; the liaison said staff and council will consider zoning-condition changes and coordinate with neighboring municipalities on the issue.
