At a June 23 work session the Cusseta‑Chattahoochee County Commission heard a brief presentation from Chris Dunn of the Georgia Forestry Commission and received staff updates on grant applications, water‑system maintenance and solid‑waste procedures.
Chris Dunn, who took on the county Forestry role in December, introduced himself and said he will return to present the unit’s annual report and outlined available resources the county can use in the event of wildland incidents or disasters. County staff noted an existing working relationship between Forestry and the county fire department.
County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners the county is reapplying for two grants — a sewer grant and a rails‑to‑trails walking‑trail grant — and that the county “has a decent shot at both” (work‑session remark). Weaver said Friendship Road is out for bid and that bids should be open in late July; award could be made by the August meeting depending on responses. He also reported ongoing audits with David McCoy and said staff are providing requested materials to move the process forward.
Weaver reported operational items: the county has hired a new animal‑control officer; Water Department repairs included six service‑line repairs and planned cleaning of Tank 2 after Tank 1 was cleaned on June 17; and the county performed 68 locates recently. Recreation updates noted the splash pad is operational and fall youth‑football registration has begun.
Commissioners discussed public confusion over rules for charging C&D (construction and demolition) at the recycling/transfer site. Weaver reviewed the current approach: residents with active water accounts may bring small amounts of household garbage, small C&D items, furniture, appliances, used motor oil, clothing and scrap metal free of charge; larger demolition or full house‑tear downs are charged. Commissioners asked the manager to contact local nonprofits (for example Goodwill or Salvation Army) about salvage of usable clothing and goods before disposal.
The work session also reviewed items proposed for the July 1 regular meeting agenda, including adding an appointment of Sheila Wilson to the Board of Tax Assessors and a proclamation honoring library employee Pam Burgamy on her retirement.
