Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session outlines cemetery bylaws, road repairs and planning reviews

At its Jan. 27 work session the Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County discussed a range of administrative and capital priorities, with County Manager Thomas Weaver asking commissioners to prepare for several action items in coming meetings.
Public attendee Robert Sumner described community training he offers at the NSA compound and asked for county collaboration on charity events.
Department heads provided operational updates. Parks and recreation director Mordie Askew said the department is transitioning from basketball to baseball and remains short-staffed for umpires and a recreation position. Code and permits updates were provided by Samantha Hedgecoke. County crews reported a repaired breaker at Well No. 4 and raised concerns about water-tower floor deterioration and roadway maintenance. Animal-control staff reported an increase in stray dogs.
Manager Weaver outlined items for upcoming agendas and work sessions: a cemetery-bylaws review (to be scheduled for the Feb. 24 work session with an invitation to the Planning & Zoning Board), a review of the conditional-use-permit (CUP) process and possible reduction of the Planning & Zoning board size from seven to five members, creating a SPLOST bank account, and using 2024 LMIG funds to repair Friendship Road. He also recommended reappointing several Planning & Zoning members and considering a public-safety director position.
Commissioner Gerald Douglas asked about HB581 and the county’s sales-tax options; Weaver said opting into the law will likely require a special election and that staff will prepare informational outreach to residents ahead of any ballot question.
The work session entered executive session at 10:12 a.m. for legal, personnel and real-estate matters and reconvened at 10:55 a.m. No votes were taken during the closed session. The work session adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
