Cusseta‑Chattahoochee commissioners select engineers for sewer and SEID grants, table radio upgrade

Cusseta‑Chattahoochee County commissioners on Jan. 6 approved engineers for two grant applications and delayed action on a proposed public‑safety radio upgrade while they seek clearer cost estimates and funding options.
The board unanimously approved hiring Barge to serve as engineer for a pending sewer grant and EMC to serve as engineer for the SEID 2025 application. Commissioner Timothy Biddle moved to approve Barge for the sewer project; Commissioner Jason Frost seconded, and the vote was unanimous. The board later approved EMC for the SEID engineering contract on a unanimous vote.
County Attorney and staff also presented a proposed technical assistance contract with the River Valley Regional Commission to provide planning and zoning support; the board voted unanimously to approve that contract, which sets an annual fee of $6,000 for consulting and attendance at meetings.
During the meeting Mr. Sullivan of Southern Link demonstrated two radio models the sheriff's office has evaluated. Chief Deputy Williamson and the county sheriff attended the presentation. Commissioners said they want to support public‑safety communications but that cost is a major concern: County Manager Thomas Weaver reported the sheriff prefers a higher‑end system and that a single high‑end radio option had been quoted at about $70,000. Commissioner Frost urged pursuing grant funding and regional cooperation on repeaters to reduce cost, but the board ultimately voted to table the radio‑system decision until a revised quote and a called meeting can be scheduled.
The board also discussed and unanimously approved a separate zoning‑renewal technical contract with the River Valley Regional Commission and received RFP evaluation information comparing Barge, EMC and Moon Meeks & Associates; the agenda packet notes that Moon Meeks charges a $6,000 preliminary engineering report and 17% of construction for engineering services, while EMC quoted 9% and no preliminary‑report fee.
No formal funding appropriation for the radio equipment was made; the board asked staff to pursue alternate quotes (including from Motorola) and possible grants and to return with more detailed cost options at a future meeting.
