Lorain County Sheriff Jack Hall briefed the Vermilion City Council on Issue 1, a voter initiative to reinstate a one-quarter percent sales tax dedicated to sheriff operations in Lorain County.
"This tax would generate nearly $14,000,000 coming into Lorain County Sheriff's Office and solely the Lorain County Sheriff's Office," Hall told the council, framing the measure as a way to return dedicated revenue that previously supported jail operations and to reduce pressure on the county general fund.
Hall said the sheriff’s office consumes a substantial portion of the county budget and that the sales-tax measure would provide a stable revenue stream for operations rather than rely on general-fund transfers. He estimated the cost to the average resident at about $1.21 per month based on typical monthly taxable spending.
Hall described several initiatives funded through donations and outreach—mounted and K-9 units, a community outreach ice-cream truck and a donated vehicle for community events—to emphasize ongoing sheriff programs and to argue that dedicated sales-tax revenue would support operations and reduce dependence on county budget fluctuations.
The council received the informational briefing; no council action on the ballot measure was taken at the meeting.
