Work session: coroner seeks $2,000 for deputy coroner; radio upgrade quote discussed

At the Dec. 22 work session Ron Hedgecoke asked the commission to amend the coroner’s budget by $2,000 to keep an extra deputy coroner and provide 24‑hour coverage. Hedgecoke said deputy coroners receive $25 per pay period and must attend annual training; he said the county has historically had two deputy coroners since 2010. Chairman Coffey did not make an immediate decision and said the commission would respond later after staff review.
County Manager Thomas Weaver noted he had recently signed two expense reimbursement reports totaling $2,000 and said he would provide the commission a fuller accounting. Weaver recommended the commission consider the request but did not present a funding motion at the work session.
Commissioners also discussed a quote for a public‑safety radio upgrade that appears to cover equipment for the sheriff’s office. Weaver cited a vendor price of approximately $68,152 for equipment and noted handheld radios would cost an additional several thousand dollars each; he asked that the radio company and the sheriff attend the next meeting to present the project and justify equipment versus repeater/maintenance options before the commission votes.
The work session entered executive session on personnel matters and reconvened without votes on either the coroner request or the radio procurement; both items will return to a future agenda for further review.
