Jasper County approves Bridge 88 design contract and commissions fire‑service study as officials plan mitigation

The Jasper County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 2 approved several infrastructure and administrative measures, including a professional‑services contract to prepare Bridge 88 for public bid and a countywide fire‑service study.
The board approved a BF&S scope of work to realign and replace Bridge 88 (County Road 1000) and to address the adjacent Zimmer Ditch; consultants told the board the design will enable public bidding in early 2027. "We had a meeting with the residents that would be impacted and everyone was on board with the project," said Jake Dammarell of BF&S. Commissioners noted a box‑culvert option reduces cost compared with rebuilding a bridge deck and will be sized to carry more flow than the existing structure.
Separately, the board approved a $44,000 contract with Vaughan Miller/K2M Design to conduct a Jasper County Fire District Study. Attorney Eric Beaver and commissioners said the study will examine options for supplementing volunteer departments with full‑time staffing, quantify costs and produce recommendations within months. "This will call out an objective point of view" on how to sustain volunteer fire coverage, one commissioner said.
Other approved administrative items included a 5‑year SAM.gov subscription (auditor recommended the five‑year plan), a county invoice to participate in KIRPC's Safe Streets for All, approval of 10 vote‑center locations for the upcoming primary election, pest‑control contracts for county buildings and payment of a plumbing invoice for a county facility. The board also authorized health‑department staff travel for certification training and scheduled a follow‑up on a Weed Board staffing proposal and associated funding sources.
Commissioners said mitigation agreements — including road‑use agreements and developer‑funded infrastructure — will be important if large projects move forward and emphasized they intend to negotiate terms to secure county resources for roads, water, and public‑safety capacity.
