Jasper County approves highway bids, ambulance contracts and multiple appointments; several routine motions carried

At its Jan. 6 meeting the Jasper County Board of Commissioners approved a slate of routine administrative and procurement items.
The board accepted highway bids for bituminous emulsified asphalt, calcium chloride, sand, limestone, hauling and equipment rentals after bids were read aloud; Ryan Hilton moved to accept all bids and the motion carried. Payroll claims (checks dated Dec. 15 and Dec. 30, 2025) and prepaid health insurance claims were approved. The board reappointed members across multiple boards and commissions, including the Plan Commission and the Redevelopment Commission.
Attorney Eric Beaver presented 2026 ambulance contracts using council‑approved appropriations; commissioners corrected a typographical amount and approved contracts set as installment payments on the 15th of each month. The approved contract totals recorded in the minutes were: Wheatfield $700,000; Keener $775,000; Jasper County EMS $1.1 million.
The board approved a road‑use agreement (RUA) for Ozinga with a route amendment that keeps heavy hauling on paved roads and denies frost/overweight exemptions; Ozinga will pay attorney fees related to the RUA. County Attorney Beaver was directed to draft an interlocal agreement with DeMotte and Wheatfield to secure local matches and ongoing maintenance responsibilities related to an INDOT HSIP striping project and the county’s SS4A Safe Streets planning effort.
Other approved administrative items included an INDOT right‑of‑way bond (cancelable upon INDOT sign‑off), employee bonds, acceptance of fuel contract amendments, and authorization to carry forward Soil & Water staff comp time to be used by the end of the third quarter of 2026. The meeting was continued to Jan. 21, 2026 for additional business and follow‑up on unresolved items such as the Nipsco rezoning.
