Colorado House adopts resolution designating portion of Arapahoe Road as 'Road of Remembrance'

The Colorado House of Representatives adopted House Joint Resolution 10-22, designating a portion of Arapahoe Road in Boulder County as the "Road of Remembrance." The measure passed by a roll-machine vote of 60 ayes, 0 no, with 5 excused.

Sponsor Representative Brown told the chamber the designation completes a more-than-century-long effort to honor World War I veterans, citing the stone gateway "pillars" built in 1928 and local civic work to preserve them. "I rise today to present this resolution recognizing the road of remembrance in Boulder County," Representative Brown said, asking members for an "I" vote and thanking local Rotary and American Legion members for their work.

Representative Joseph, a co-sponsor, said the designation "is not creating something new. We're completing something that should have been done a long time ago," and framed the resolution as fulfilling a promise to enshrine remembrance beyond a single day. Representative Smith also urged support, saying she was proud the chamber was recognizing the pillars and their history.

The resolution text, read in full on the House floor, recounts that communities in Boulder County planned a Road of Remembrance after the armistice of Nov. 11, 1918, and describes construction of the gateway pillars and an adjacent park in 1928. It designates the portion of Arapahoe Road from U.S. Route 36 (mile marker 52.29) to U.S. Route 287 (mile marker 60.683) as the Road of Remembrance and authorizes the Colorado Department of Transportation to accept gifts, grants and donations to place signage marking the designation and to explore a cooperative agreement with Boulder County on maintenance.

Representative Brown noted civic history and local efforts to coordinate with CDOT and Boulder County, and he recognized members of the Boulder Rotary and American Legion who were present. The clerk opened the voting machine and, after members cast votes, the Speaker announced the resolution was adopted with a vote tally of 60 ayes, 0 no, and 5 excused; Representative Bottoms and Representative Luck were explicitly recorded voting yes and Representative Carter was recorded excused.

After adoption, the House recognized cosponsors and several guests in the gallery. The majority leader then moved to lay over the balance of the calendar until Thursday, March 19, 2026, and the House recessed until later the same day.
