County approves generator repairs, blinds and reviews pig-shelter option for Lovell Annex and fairgrounds

Big Horn County commissioners approved repairs and equipment purchases for the Lovell Annex and discussed a proposed pig-shelter project for the fairgrounds during the Jan. 21 meeting.

Facilities Manager Jeremy Pouska presented a quote for an electrical surge protector and installation to address recurring generator issues at the Lovell Annex and recommended replacement of a faulty switch. Commissioner Bruce Jolley moved to approve funding for the switch repair and protector for a total of $10,885; the motion was seconded and carried. Pouska said the Public Health Emergency Prep Grant may cover up to half the project cost.

Pouska also presented quotes for window blinds at the Lovell Annex; Commissioner Dave Neves moved to approve a $9,555.80 quote for the basic style Pouska recommended, and the motion carried.

On fairgrounds facilities, Pouska presented three options for replacing the pig barn/shelter and recommended a new concrete-and-steel structure in the existing footprint at an estimated $197,239; that estimate excluded electrical work and demolition of the existing slab. Pouska said portable pens could be used to make the shelter multifunctional. He will share the proposal with Fair Manager Catherine Foss and the Fair Board for further consideration.

The commission also, by consensus, told Foss to explore selling the mechanical bull and not to renew its insurance because of cost concerns.

Next steps: Pouska will pursue grant funding for the generator work, coordinate the blinds purchase, and forward pig-shelter details to the Fair Board for further action.
