Board recognizes county departments after record NACo achievement awards

The Orange County Board of Supervisors opened its Sept. 23 meeting by recognizing county departments that won a record 25 National Association of Counties (NACo) achievement awards this year.
Chair Doug Chaffee noted the awards span eight departments and applauded staff for programs that improve access to services and streamline county operations. "These achievements are the result of collective effort and would not have been possible without a clear understanding of the issues the county faces," Chaffee said.
Departments cited included OC Waste & Recycling (programs for sustainability, landfill safety training and mattress/metal recycling), the Registrar of Voters (three awards for prebunking misinformation, GIS accessibility work, and a high-school volunteer program), OC Health Care Agency (behavioral health crisis assessment and EMS data exchange), OC Parks, County Library, Human Services, procurement, and joint awards recognizing law enforcement collaboration and an election command center.
Huey Nguyen, Clerk-Recorder, thanked staff and described a 24/7 consumer-facing "CR bot" that has reduced inbound calls by about 10% and previewed expanded e-filing for business owners. "This has relieved almost 10% of phone calls since we started this a year ago," Nguyen said.
No formal board action was taken on the recognitions; the acknowledgments were followed by presentations on Hunger Action Month and California Surfing Day.
