The county highway committee heard a detailed presentation on its AVL/GPS telematics system, which is installed on nearly all trucks and many pieces of equipment.
The Chair described live maps showing equipment locations, historical breadcrumbs that can be zoomed to review a truck's movements during a storm, and data points including engine ignition, PTO inputs (to detect mower use), speed and salt application rates. "We have live maps that'll show you the location of all the equipment," the Chair said. He said the system has been helpful in defending roughly five or six insurance claims in the past six months and can export data for review.
Committee members asked whether the data are public; the Chair said no, the county does not make the system public. He explained the product links to DOT's MDSS system so DOT can see certain truck activity through that linkage, though the chair said the countys program is not the same as direct DOT access. The chair also described battery diagnostics and exception reports that flag idling beyond a threshold to preserve equipment life.
Members discussed possible further automation (reports and exception alerts) and next steps for using the data in operations and insurance processes. The committee did not take formal action on the presentation; it moved on to packet reports and other agenda items.
