Council member urges restoration of 1964 City Hall, proposes Memorial Park museum district

During the latter portion of the Nov. 17 Boca Raton workshop, Council Member Wigder delivered a detailed historical presentation on the city's original 1964 City Hall and the evolution of Memorial Park. He urged the council to consider restoring and adaptively reusing the 1964 mid-century building (potentially removing the 1983 rear addition), to explore historic-preservation grants and to create a Memorial Park Museum District or land trust that could broaden cultural uses downtown.

Wigder said archival aerials and historic plans show earlier park layouts and civic design elements that could be rehabilitated, and suggested the city could pursue historic-preservation grants and philanthropic engagement to help fund restoration. He noted the Boca Raton Historic Society's storage needs and proposed that a restored City Hall complex could house museum or cultural uses as well as civic meeting spaces. Wigder framed his proposal as complementary to the ongoing 1 BOCA planning process: he argued the council has time to consider alternate approaches for the west side because the city has acquired interim space for administrative services at 6551 and because the master plan is still under public review.

The mayor and other council members responded that the building has water damage and that further analysis is required to determine whether restoration is feasible; staff said design and programming work would continue if the council moves forward. The discussion closed with staff noting follow-up and additional opportunities to discuss preservation and adaptive reuse in upcoming meetings.
