Macon County begins search for new county manager; Roland to depart Nov. 1

Chairman Gary Shields introduced Jack Horton of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC), who said the NCACC provides outreach and recruitment assistance, can help fill interim and permanent positions, and typically offers interim placements (often retired county managers) for short-term commitments of around three months at no cost to the county.
Shields said Nov. 1, 2024, will be Roland’s last day. Commissioner Josh Young requested a closed-session discussion for internal deliberations about the position. At 9:37 a.m. the board voted unanimously (motion by Commissioner Danny Antoine, seconded by Chairman Gary Shields) to enter closed session under N.C.G.S. 143-318.11(a)(3) and (a)(6) to consult with counsel and consider qualifications and compensation for potential employees.
The board emerged from closed session at 11:25 a.m. following a unanimous vote (motion by Commissioner Josh Young, seconded by Chairman Gary Shields). No open-session personnel decisions or contract terms were recorded in the transcript. The meeting adjourned at 11:27 a.m. after a unanimous motion to adjourn.
