Macon County appoints Warren Cabe interim manager after Derek Roland’s resignation

The Macon County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 8 accepted County Manager Derek Roland’s resignation and unanimously appointed Warren Cabe as interim county manager, effective Nov. 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025.

Roland, who served Macon County as county manager and clerk to the board since Dec. 16, 2013 (and earlier as a planner), was recognized by commissioners and members of the public at the meeting for 11 years of service. A board resolution introduced at the meeting credited Roland with growing the county fund balance from $15,260,538 to $45,106,813 and cited multiple capital projects and program improvements completed during his tenure.

Attorney Eric Ridenour read the motion to appoint Cabe. Commissioner Gary Shields moved to accept the appointment; Commissioner Antoine seconded and the vote was unanimous. The board approved a salary of $154,526.45 and a $500 monthly car allowance for the interim period. Warren Cabe thanked the board for its vote of confidence and praised county staff involved in recent storm-response efforts.

Why it matters: The board’s action provides immediate leadership continuity during ongoing recovery work from Hurricane Helene and as county staff implement a planned software upgrade and other transitions. County officials said they expect transition arrangements to be in effect while recruitment or further personnel decisions are made.

Next steps: Cabe assumes duties Nov. 1 and will serve through June 30, 2025, unless the board takes further action. The board did not discuss a permanent replacement timetable at the Oct. 8 meeting.
