Lee County board approves 911 bill payment, pursues unclaimed property and appoints EMS coordinator

At its July 24 recess meeting the Lee County Board of Supervisors approved a set of vendor payments, personnel appointments and administrative actions.
County staff presented an Intrado invoice totaling $300,000 for the county 911 backbone; staff said $16,701.57 had already been paid and that the remainder would be reimbursed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management in roughly four to six weeks. The board approved paying the invoice so the county could later claim reimbursement.
The board also considered a Lane Group agreement related to solid-waste DEQ paperwork; staff said the agreement matched prior contracts and asked for approval to enter it. A motion to proceed with the agreement was made and carried.
On local finance, staff reported roughly $67,000 in unclaimed state-held property for the Town of Saint Charles and requested authority to pursue recovery. The board authorized the county administrator to pursue the unclaimed property and, if recovered, deposit proceeds into a separate fund for the town's benefit.
Personnel and administrative actions coming out of a closed session included a recommended hire: the board voted to hire Matthew Robert Duncan for an IT position at an annual salary of $52,000. The board also appointed Veil Edwards as the county EMS coordinator by unanimous voice vote. Board members then approved a supplement for Joanne, who had stepped into the head dispatcher role, and discussed equalizing certain 911-related staff pay with county-funded employees.
On procurement and equipment the board authorized staff to solicit bids for a commercial-grade lawnmower and asked the administrator to look for applicable grants for an airport mower; the motion (as amended) passed. The meeting adjourned after routine closing motions.
What happens next: staff will pursue the unclaimed property claim, process the Intrado payment pending reimbursement, complete the IT hire paperwork and implement the dispatcher supplement agreed by the board.
