Lee County board backs Black Lung resolution, approves lower‑cost 9‑1‑1 backup service and moves to closed session

At its July 15 meeting the Lee County Board of Supervisors took a series of operational and procedural actions, including a resolution vote, contract authorization and multiple appointments.
The board moved to support a Black Lung Benefit resolution (listed as resolution 25‑009 on the agenda). The motion was seconded and carried; board members said they would supply a signed copy to the petitioner.
County staff presented two quotes for 9‑1‑1 UPS/back‑up service. The county administrator recommended switching to the DC Group, noting the vendor’s quote was about 40% lower than the manufacturer’s five‑year agreement. “Their quote is about 60% to do that same service as what the manufacturer is,” the administrator said, and a motion to enter an agreement with DC Group passed.
The administrator also reported an Avgas pump at the airport had been damaged by a lightning‑related relay failure. A replacement pump quote of $4,727.76 was presented; installation and associated costs were estimated at roughly $6,500–$7,000. The board authorized repair work so the airport can continue fuel sales.
The meeting included numerous routine appointments and reappointments to boards and authorities (airport authority appointments, planning commission matters, tourism committee items, and others). Several housekeeping motions approved prior meeting minutes and supplemental disbursements.
Before adjournment the board voted to enter a closed session under Va. Code 2.2‑3711(A)(1) (personnel) and (A)(6) (investment of public funds). The board recessed and will reconvene July 24 at 5:00 p.m.
