Veterans administration reports client growth and seeks partners for replacement van

Parke County Veterans Administration reported 21 new clients, several appeals and 54 veteran-van trips since Jan. 5; the office seeks contributions from neighboring counties and the Disabled American Veterans to fund a replacement van.
Ray Leonberger reported to the Parke County Board of Commissioners that the Veterans Administration has taken on 21 new clients since the prior report, with 15 new claims in motion and five clients in appeals. Six new veterans are receiving state benefits, Leonberger said.
He said the Veterans' Van has completed 54 trips since Jan. 5 and that the office currently uses three vehicles but expects to lose the large DAV van. Leonberger said he has discussed a plan with Vermillion and Putnam counties to contribute $5,000 each, which combined with Parke County’s share would reach $15,000; the Disabled American Veterans would then contribute an additional $15,000 to reach an estimated $30,000 toward purchasing a replacement van. He also noted outreach by Senator Banks on a separate POW benefits issue and mentioned new VA dental benefits for veterans.
Leonberger described one case in which he arranged temporary motel housing for a recently hospitalized veteran who had been homeless and reiterated that veterans with dental needs should be referred to his office for assistance.
