Lee County supervisors approve woodworking shop special-use permit, clear routine business

JOHNVILLE, Va. — The Lee County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 16 approved a special-use permit allowing a woodworking and cabinetry shop on a 1.533-acre parcel in Rose Hill and completed multiple routine items in the regular meeting.
Planning staff described the application by Steven Brandon Berger and said the planning commission had unanimously recommended approval. The board took a voice vote on the motion to approve the special-use permit; the chair announced the motion carried.
The board also approved a $34.90 refund to the named estate for a probate-tax error after the state had already approved its portion; authorized county staff to apply for two sheriff’s grants (about $15,050 total) that require a local match historically funded from the fuel and uniform fund; and approved purchase of two mowers for public works/airport use after reviewing quotes and grant possibilities.
The board adopted a personal-property tax relief resolution for FY 2025–26 setting relief at 48.37% for qualifying used vehicles up to $20,000.
Other business included a discussion about airport terminal grant restrictions — staff said the terminal was built primarily with state and federal funds and that nonterminal uses could trigger a payback that staff estimated at $273,000 — and preliminary discussion of a small solar project for the Department of Social Services building with an estimated payback of about 4 to 4½ years if construction qualifies before funding deadlines.
The board recessed to closed session later in the meeting for personnel and placement-of-public-funds matters, returned, voted to reinstate a convenience-center worker and adjourned.
