Glacier County commissioners authorize Northern Transit to auction county bus
Summary
The board granted Northern Transit permission to run a public auction for a long-out-of-service Glacier County Transit bus, after the transit representative said state rules require public sale and he offered to manage the auction and report proceeds to the county.
On Nov. 17, 2025, the Glacier County Board of Commissioners approved a request from Northern Transit to put a long-out-of-service Glacier County Transit bus up for public auction.
David R. Irvin, a Northern Transit representative who joined the meeting by phone, told commissioners the bus has been parked in Shelby and that Montana Department of Transportation procedures require vehicles acquired through MDT procurement be offered on a public auction. "If you guys want me to get it entered in public auction, I can do that with your approval," Irvin said.
A commissioner told the board the vehicle had not been running for some time and that Northern Transit could likely move the sale sooner than the county. Commissioner (identified in the meeting as Matt Bach) moved to give Northern Transit interlocal permission to auction the Glacier County Transit bus; a second was recorded and the board voted in favor.
Irvin said he would "cc you guys through the whole process" and notify the commissioners when the auction ends and what the bus sells for. The approval allows Northern Transit to proceed with the public auction process subject to any state requirements noted by Irvin.
