Cramerton amends fence rules, raises allowable residential heights

Cramerton, N.C. — The Town of Cramerton’s Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Aug. 18 to amend the Land Development Code to allow taller residential fences.
Staff told the board that current code limits front-yard fences to 3 feet and side and rear yards to 6 feet. The proposed amendment, TA-22-01, would raise the front-yard limit to 4 feet and the side/rear limit to 8 feet. Staff cited resident requests for taller front-yard fences to contain pets and broader privacy concerns; staff also said several older, more established areas in town already feature fences that exceed current limits. The Planning Board reviewed the request in July and unanimously recommended approval.
No members of the public signed up to speak at the hearing. Mayor Pro Tempore Neeley made the motion to approve TA-22-01; Commissioner Ramsey seconded it and the board voted 5–0 in favor. The amendment will change Section 5.4.1 of the Land Development Code to reflect the new maxima.
Board members framed the change as aligning code with community practice and addressing homeowner privacy while discussing potential tradeoffs for streetscape and visibility near sidewalks and intersections. The board did not specify an effective date in the hearing; staff follow-up will determine implementation details.
