Dawes County approves $162,000 crack‑sealing contract, agrees to help Chadron move airport buildings

The Dawes County Board of Commissioners on May 13 approved a $162,000 contract with Midwest Coatings Company, Inc. to crack seal about 10 miles of county roads, and agreed to cooperate with the City of Chadron to move two buildings from the county airport using a county flatbed if the contractor does not provide one.
Highway Superintendent Wade Yada told the board he received a single bid for a crack‑sealing project that will concentrate on the Airport, Country Club, Dunlap, Table Center and Redfern roads. The board voted to accept Midwest Coatings’ bid after a motion by Commissioner Jake Stewart, seconded by Commissioner Walter Juhlin; all three commissioners voted aye.
Yada also reported routine maintenance totals and equipment problems: District 1 logged 160.45 miles bladed, District 2 logged 103.65 miles and District 3 logged 113.25 miles for a total of 344.85 miles. He said the county’s crusher is down (no rent being charged while it is out of service) and the scraper’s hitch broke; NMC quoted roughly $30,000 to repair the scraper.
City Manager Tom Menke asked whether the Roads Department could make a county flatbed available “in the event the contractor doesn’t provide a flatbed to move the structures.” The board voted to cooperate with the City of Chadron and allow use of a county flatbed under the supervision of the Highway Superintendent if necessary (motion by Stewart; seconded by Juhlin). The motion passed on a roll‑call vote recorded as aye from Commissioners Stewart, Rivera and Juhlin.
The board heard no dissenting votes on the crack‑sealing award. The agreement to assist Chadron is limited to providing county equipment under Highway Superintendent oversight; the board did not authorize additional county labor beyond routine supervision or expand the contract with the City.
The board will address equipment repairs and contract administration in future meetings. The next Dawes County Commissioners meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2025.
