Catawba County declines offer to buy small parcel near Balls Creek Elementary

Staff told the board the property — described in BOE materials as no more than 0.1 acres between two neighboring parcels — is unnecessary for county operations. The BOE had followed North Carolina General Statutes in declaring the parcel surplus and, under state law, offered it to the county at fair market value before pursuing other disposal procedures.
Commissioner Robert C. Abernethy Jr. moved to decline the purchase; the motion passed unanimously. The board adopted Resolution No. 2026-5, recording that the county declined the offer. Staff noted that if the county declines, the BOE may proceed with statutorily authorized disposal methods and that proceeds from any sale are applied per state law to reduce bonded indebtedness for the school administrative unit or for capital outlay purposes.
The meeting adjourned following adoption of the resolution.
