Boca Raton staff describe response to intense localized rainfall; public works posts hotlines

City staff briefed the Boca Raton City Council on Oct. 27 about an intense, localized rainfall event that hit parts of the city overnight and into the early morning.
City Manager (introduced on the record) and Public Works staff said some southeast neighborhoods received as much as 6 to 7 inches of rain in a short period, overwhelming localized capacity though the municipal stormwater system performed as designed. Staff reported numerous calls for police and fire rescue (hundreds of service calls overnight) and described coordinated towing and road-blocking operations to manage flooded roadways.
Public Works staff provided numbers for residents to request assistance: the Public Works number for storm drain reports is (561) 416-3430; an additional stormwater request line was given as (561) 416-3402. Staff said they mobilized crews overnight and would compile an after-action report by the end of the week and share lessons learned publicly. The city said it coordinates with the South Florida Water Management District on canal drawdowns and gate operations during such events.
Staff emphasized neighborhood-level mitigation such as swale restoration and asked residents to report clogged grates and submit service requests via the myBoca site or the City Quick Fix app. The city also reminded residents to sign up for text and email alerts (Alert Boca) for updates.
No significant injuries or water intrusion into residences were reported to staff prior to the workshop.
