CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Senate Pensions Committee voted on Feb. 25 to report Senate Bill 1,074 to the full Senate with the recommendation that it do pass and with its original double committee reference to the Finance Committee.
Committee counsel described the bill: "This bill simply, does what the short title implies. It simply allows newly hired ambulance drivers to participate in the emergency medical services retirement system by including them in the definition of a member in that article." Counsel added that a fiscal note had not yet been submitted for the bill and that it is newly introduced.
The vice chairman moved that the committee report SB 1,074 to the full Senate with a do-pass recommendation and referral to the Finance Committee; the committee approved the motion by voice vote.
Why it matters: the change would allow newly hired ambulance drivers who meet the definition of emergency medical vehicle operator to participate in the EMS retirement plan administered through the state's retirement framework. Counsel indicated the measure is new and that the committee will refer fiscal questions to the Finance Committee for further review.
