CROSSVILLE, Tenn. — The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners approved a $40,000 budget amendment on Jan. 20 to upgrade the audio system used for commission meetings and courthouse proceedings, but not before at least one commissioner said he lacked enough information to support the purchase.
On Resolution 01-2026-9, Commissioner Terry Lowe said he "felt there was not enough information before voting on this resolution," urging caution. County Mayor Allen Foster responded that he had sought a solution to courthouse audio problems and said he believes the proposed system will address the issues.
Commissioner Jerry Cooper said the timing was appropriate to install the system during ongoing construction. Commissioner Tom Isham said the proposed system represented good value for the price, and Commissioner Sue Ann York said the upgrade was ‘‘much needed’’ for commission meetings. Colleen Mall moved the resolution; David Gibson seconded it. The motion passed by unanimous roll call vote.
Why it matters: Clear audio in meeting rooms affects public access to government proceedings, the accuracy of minutes and residents' ability to follow deliberations. The commission directed staff to proceed with the upgrade and to report an installation timeline.
What’s next: Staff implementation tasks were discussed; the transcript records a follow-up direction for staff to report on the installation timeline and to proceed with procurement.
