Nemaha County commissioners approve routine contracts, accept deputy emergency management resignation

The Nemaha County Board of Commissioners met July 2 in the commissioners’ chambers at the Nemaha County Courthouse in Auburn and approved several administrative items including contracts, a subdivision resolution and routine claims.
Chairman Michael Weiss called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. and the board approved the meeting agenda and the June 18, 2025 minutes after motions from Commissioner Bryan Mellage and Commissioner Mike Hall; roll call votes were recorded with each commissioner voting aye.
The board designated the Nebraska State Print Shop to print and mail the 2025 LB644 joint hearing postcards after a motion by Mellage and second by Hall; the motion passed on a roll call vote with Commissioners Hall, Mellage and Weiss voting aye.
Commissioner Mellage moved, and Commissioner Hall seconded, to accept the resignation of Jeff Rowell as Deputy Director of Emergency Management effective July 4, 2025; the board recorded the vote as aye by Hall, Mellage and Weiss and accepted the resignation. The board considered but took no action on a separate proposal to contract with Rowell as Flood Plain Administrator.
The board approved a renewal service contract with Vanguard Appraisals Inc. for the assessor website following a motion by Hall and second by Mellage; the motion passed on roll call. The board also approved Right of Way application #2025-11 for the Omaha Public Power District at 62726 732 Road and adopted Resolution #2025-13, a subdivision for the Pederson Trust covering Sec. 5 T4N R13E and Sec. 4 T4N R13E; both measures were approved on recorded roll call votes.
Under buildings and grounds, the board received updates on the Unite Internet installation and the courthouse security camera/phone system and approved issuing a Request for Proposal for a new telephone system for the courthouse and the Nemaha County Law Enforcement Building (motion by Mellage, second by Hall; roll call recorded as aye for each commissioner).
The agenda listed an open public discussion period and a scheduled 9:30 a.m. presentation by vendors (Travis Boyll of Nebraska Machinery Company and Taylor Wenzl of Murphy Truck & Tractor) to discuss motorgrader equipment; the minutes note the scheduled time slots but do not record any public comments or transcribed vendor presentations.
The board approved payment of accounts payable claims as presented by the county clerk. The minutes list details including general fund salaries of $72,006.67 and road fund salaries of $21,707.63 and several large vendor payments such as NIRMA at $120,651.43 and Martin Marietta at $50,466.13.
With no further business, the board adjourned at 10:25 a.m. County Clerk Diane Johnson certified the minutes and noted a complete copy is available at the clerk’s office and on the county website.
