The Lee County Board of Supervisors advanced a proposed zoning text amendment on June 18 that would allow "event venues" by special‑use permit in the A‑1 agricultural district. The county posted a joint public hearing for June 18, 2024, in the General District Courtroom to solicit input on the proposed change.
County staff explained that the amendment adds a definition of “event venue” as real property, with or without permanent structures, used to host banquets, dinners, weddings and similar affairs; venues may include live entertainment and on‑site food or drink and are intended to be for‑profit operations, not personal use. “With the county zoning ordinance, the way it is written, if it’s not in the ordinance as a permitted use or as a special use, it’s not allowed,” a county staff member said. After questions from supervisors, the chair recorded a motion and the board voted in favor to advance the item.
Staff said the amendment was intended to give the county a clear path for permitting event venues in rural areas by requiring a special‑use review. The joint public hearing announcement instructs interested residents to attend the June 18 session in Daleville.
