Dubois County awarded $3.79 million in federal bridge safety funds, must secure design consultant by Aug. 1

Levi Leffert, Dubois County highway engineer, told the commissioners on March 2 that the Indiana Department of Transportation awarded $2,835,000 in federal funds to pay 90% of construction and inspection costs for a countywide bridge safety improvement project covering roughly 60 bridges.
The award requires the county to be under contract with a design consultant by Aug. 1, 2026. Leffert said the county has completed and submitted a request for proposals to INDOT and will post the RFP on INDOT's website so interested consultants may submit Letters of Interest. "Once a consultant is selected through the RFP process, the County will be awarded an additional $954,000 for preliminary engineering," Leffert said, citing the funding terms announced by INDOT. In total, the county expects $3,789,000 in federal support for the program.
Why it matters: the county said the project will fund installation of bridge rail, guardrail and end treatments intended to prevent and mitigate vehicle runoffs on older county structures. Leffert emphasized the schedule constraint: design services must be under contract by Aug. 1 to keep the federal funds on track.
The county will follow its standard consultant selection process; Leffert said the RFP has been completed and posted to INDOT for distribution. No formal board vote was recorded on the award itself during the meeting; the item was presented as an engineering update with procurement steps to follow.
