St. Mary Parish Council tables resolution backing Atchafalaya Basin plan after presentation

Dean Wilson, executive director of Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, told the St. Mary Parish Council at its Feb. 25 meeting in Franklin that his organization had prepared an Atchafalaya Basin Management Plan and presented it to the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA). "We are in litigation with CPRA," Wilson said during a PowerPoint presentation requesting a Council resolution of support.
Councilmember Rodney Olander asked to move the resolution forward on the agenda but then moved to table the resolution to an uncertain future; Rev. Craig Mathews seconded the motion. The motion to table carried on a roll‑call vote of 9‑0 (two members absent).
Wilson’s presentation focused on sedimentation and basin protection and asked the Council to send a formal letter or resolution supporting the Basin plan when it is presented to CPRA. Council members did not debate the content at length before tabling; the record shows the Council took no additional action on the request during the meeting.
Because the Basinkeeper described being in active litigation with CPRA, the matter may require legal review or coordination with other local governments before any formal parish support is offered. The Council did not set a timeline for reconsideration.
