Commission schedules public hearing for downtown property conversion after Planning Board recommendation

The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commission agreed Jan. 6 to place a public hearing on the Jan. 27 agenda for a proposed conversion of a former cleaners on East 3rd Street into residential units.
Carl (staff) told commissioners the applicant, identified in the Planning Board report as Mike King of King Enterprises, bought the corner property across from Fred Moudre and has cleaned up the site. Because the proposal would change the property from central-business development standards (residential over commercial) to entirely residential use, it required a major development permit; the Planning Board recommended approval.
Commissioners described the property as an eyesore for years and said the residential conversion would better match surrounding south-side development. "This would make a much more cohesive block there," one commissioner said, urging the commission to get the item before them so they could move forward. The commission voted to place the public hearing on the Jan. 27 agenda.
No formal permit was approved on Jan. 6; the public hearing will give neighbors and interested parties an opportunity to comment before any final decision.
