Nemaha County Board of Equalization elects officers, approves nonprofit motor-vehicle tax exemptions

At its Jan. 14 meeting in Auburn, the Nemaha County Board of Equalization elected Bryan Mellage chair and Michael Weiss vice chair for 2026, opened and closed a public hearing with no attendees, and approved motor-vehicle tax exemptions for five nonprofit organizations and one park foundation.
The Nemaha County Board of Equalization met Jan. 14, 2026, in the Commissioners Chambers at the Nemaha County Courthouse in Auburn and elected Commissioner Bryan Mellage chair and Commissioner Michael Weiss vice chair for 2026. County Clerk Diane Johnson called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.
The board opened a public hearing on Applications for Motor Vehicle Exemption (Form 457) for 2026 and, noting no members of the public were present, closed the hearing at 10:35 a.m. County Treasurer Jana Gerdes presented the exemption applications during the hearing record.
Commissioner Mike Hall nominated Bryan Mellage for chair; Michael Weiss seconded the nomination. Roll-call votes were Weiss — aye; Hall — aye; Mellage — abstain; Mellage was elected chair. Hall then nominated Michael Weiss for vice chair, seconded by Mellage; roll-call votes were Mellage — aye; Hall — aye; Weiss — abstain, and Weiss was elected vice chair.
The board approved the meeting agenda (motion by Hall, seconded by Weiss) and approved the Dec. 30, 2025 minutes without corrections (motion by Weiss, seconded by Hall). Both motions passed on unanimous roll-call votes.
On the applications for motor-vehicle tax exemptions, the board approved the following:
- Good Samaritan Society of Auburn: exemptions for a 2003 Ford bus; 2012 Chevrolet pickup; 2011 Gosh coach bus; 2012 Dodge sport van; 2018 Chevrolet Equinox; 2016 Braun Ind handicap van; and a 2015 Load Trail utility trailer (motion by Hall; seconded by Weiss; roll call: Mellage — aye; Weiss — aye; Hall — aye).
- Good Samaritan Society Home Care of Southeast Nebraska: exemptions for a group of passenger vehicles including model years 2012–2023 and multiple Ford and Chevrolet sedans and Equinox SUVs as enumerated in the record (motion by Weiss; seconded by Hall; roll call: Hall — aye; Mellage — aye; Weiss — aye).
- St James Lutheran Church – Longbranch: exemption for a 2012 Chevrolet four‑door sedan (motion by Weiss; seconded by Hall; roll call unanimous).
- LL Coryell & Sons Park Foundation: exemption for a 1999 Chevrolet pickup (motion by Hall; seconded by Weiss; roll call unanimous).
- Peru State College Foundation: exemption for a 2024 Ford Edge (motion by Weiss; seconded by Hall; roll call unanimous).
With no further business, the board adjourned at 10:37 a.m. Diane Johnson, Nemaha County Clerk, certified that the foregoing minutes are true and that a complete copy is available during normal business hours at the County Clerk’s office or on the Nemaha County website.
