Macon County board roundup: bond release, lease extension, tax refund, consent agenda and appointments

At the Aug. 8 meeting the board unanimously released a $110,361 bond for Whiteside Cottages, approved a USDA lease extension at $826.66/month, authorized a $15,854.60 tax refund for parcels on the Macon–Swain line, approved the consent agenda and confirmed two routine appointments.
Several routine but consequential items were handled by the Macon County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 8:
• Whiteside Cottages bond release: Planning Director Joe Allen recommended, and the board unanimously approved, release of a $110,361 bond posted by the Pradera Group for retaining-wall and roadway-fill work.
• USDA Macon Service Center lease: Finance Director Lori Carpenter briefed the board on a lease extension at $826.66 per month with no changes; the board approved the extension unanimously.
• Tax refund for boundary parcels: Tax Administrator Abby Braswell reported that 12 parcels along the Macon–Swain county line had been taxed in Macon but are in Swain County; the board approved a five-year refund totaling $15,854.60, to be charged to prior-year revenues.
• Volunteer fire department purchase: The board gave consensus to prepare official letters supporting Cullasaja Gorge VFD’s planned truck purchase; Finance Director Carpenter will draft finance documentation and the chairman will sign an endorsement letter.
• Consent agenda and appointments: The board approved the consent agenda (including budget amendments and tax releases totaling $18,562.83) and confirmed the reappointment of Brett Rogers to the Southwestern Community College Board of Trustees and the appointment of Vivian Honey to the Jury Commission.
