Board backs plan to fold Union Academy into Franklin High School project

The Macon County Board of Commissioners voted July 11 to support a plan to fold Union Academy into the Franklin High School (FHS) project.
Commissioner Shields said portions of the FHS project are grant funded and that grant conditions favor a "school within a school" structure. Superintendent Josh Lynch told the board Macon County Schools supports consolidation because Union Academy students face distance and travel barriers; he said the plan would preserve Union Academy’s branding while expanding access to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and extracurricular activities. Principal Brian Moffitt described facility limitations at Union Academy, including a lack of a full gym and library space. Board of Education member Diedre Breeden expressed support and Commissioner Antoine said students deserve the same opportunities as children elsewhere in the county.
Commissioner Shields moved that the Board of Commissioners agree to merge Union Academy into the FHS project; Commissioner Antoine seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The board’s vote was an expression of support for the school system’s plan; the school board and project funders will finalize project details and implementation.
