The Macon County Board of Commissioners narrowly approved adding four grant-funded positions after Housing Director John Fay told the board the county would receive $840,000 in housing grant funding that requires additional staffing.
Fay said the proposed hires would include one administrative clerk, an auditor/team leader, and two retrofit installers to implement grant projects. He asked the board to approve the positions with the understanding that they would end if the grant funding ceased.
Commissioner Young moved to approve the positions with that contingency; the motion, seconded by Commissioner Shields, passed 3–2 with Commissioners Young, Shields and Antoine voting in favor and Commissioners Shearl and Chairman Higdon opposed.
The board recessed briefly after the vote; when it reconvened, staff continued other agenda items. County leaders said the positions are intended to be funded entirely by the grant and to sunset if the grant terminates.
