Broadway board collects ideas for America's 250 celebration, reschedules December meeting

At its Nov. 24 meeting the Town of Broadway Board of Commissioners discussed community ideas for celebrating America's 250th anniversary and confirmed several holiday event dates.
Mayor Donald Andrews led a nonbinding discussion to gather ideas for an America's 250 celebration, suggesting possible elements including an event at the Veterans Memorial, a small golf-cart parade, a first-responder parade, a church choir program, a pie-eating contest, food/snack vendors, a time capsule and a rededication ceremony. The board did not take a formal vote on plans; the discussion was a planning session to solicit ideas.
The board also approved a scheduling change, moving the December regular meeting from Dec. 22 to Dec. 15 because of the Christmas holiday. Commissioner April Collins moved to change the date and Mayor Pro Tem Tommy Beal seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner April Collins reminded residents that the town's tree-lighting ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 7 at 4:00 p.m., with luminaries at Watson Lake at 7:00 p.m., and that the Christmas parade is set for Dec. 13 at 2:00 p.m. Mayor Donald Andrews said the town has contacted Duke Energy to request streetlights be installed on poles along N. Main Street near new curbing and noted an Angel and Nativity display donated in memory of Mr. Morgan at Edgewater and Town Hall.
Mayor Pro Tem Tommy Beal, who was thanked several times during the meeting, said it had been his pleasure to serve the town for 32 years and that he will remain available to help as needed. The meeting concluded with a unanimous motion to adjourn.
